9/1/13 11:15 am: photos of the height of Alum fire activity Sunday

Even when groups of trees torched about 3 pm Sunday, visitors saw mostly smoke from smoldering materials rather than flame.  Although temperatures were high and the air was dry, not enough wind arrived to make the fire grow as it might have:

The Grand Loop Road by LeHardy picnic area, directly under the fire, was clear of smoke at 5:15 pm, at the height of the"burning period" Sunday afternoon, when fire is usually most active:
